PADI has just launched a brand new Dive Centre in the virtual reality of the famous online world, Second Life (SL).
It’s actually more like a 3D platform, where you can walk around and talk to others through the character you control, you can buy clothes, a car or a yacht.
Second Life even has its own currency that is exchangeable into real world money, and there are loads of things to do. You can go to a night club and dance, you can go to a concert transmitted live into Second Life or – as of now – you can go diving!
The brand new PADI Centre in Second Life lets users learn about everything from scuba gear to the great dive destinations all over the world – and of course: it lets you click right through to PADI’s Open Water Diver eLearning programme, where you can study the theory part of the course and then choose a (real life) PADI Dive centre to do the in-water training with.
The PADI Center in Second Life was created and designed by Scotland based Second Life design company, Fusion Unity.
Here are Scubaherald’s instructions to visit the PADI Centre:
- Go to the Second Life home page
- Create a free character (called an avatar)
- To visit the PADI Centre inside Second Life, click search at the bottom of the screen
- Then select places and type the word “PADI”
- Click “teleport” and you land outside the PADI Centre
If you are a PADI IRRA member and interested in setting up a dive centre in Second Life on the soon to be “PADI” dive island – send an email to marketing@padi.co.uk and in collaboration with Fusion Unity, they can help you get started.
